The American College of Sports Medicine tells us that eating a little extra protein a day is especially important for very physically active people. In order to maintain your muscle, you need to maintain enough protein in your diet. Studies also have shown that as we age we tend to eat less protein, which is just the opposite of what we should be doing to maintain our muscle mass and our nutritional well-being.
Call to Action:
- As a general rule of thumb, eat at least three-fourths of your body weight in grams of protein a day. For example, if you weigh 140 lbs. you should eat at least 105 grams of protein daily.
- Try to get 20 to 25 percent of your daily calories from protein. This is easy to accomplish when you choose to eat nutrient-dense foods. For example, 6 ounces of seafood, salmon or tuna, provides 40 grams of protein.
