Antioxidants are substances that fight free radical damage in the body.  You may be asking: What are free radicals?

Here’s a simple explanation.  The body assimilates food nutrients at a cellular level to drive certain reactions that occur within the body.  This is called cellular metabolism or respiration.  Free radicals are by-products produced by these reactions.  In the body, these substances bump into organs, vessels, and everything else, damaging them in the process.  That is why the body ages, and not always so gracefully. Broccoli – A Nutritional Powerhouse

Broccoli is a member of the brassica family of cruciferous vegetables along with its close relatives which include bok choy, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and Swiss chard.  But unlike just any other green veggie, broccoli reins as superhero food status.  Per one cup serving, broccoli contains more than 2 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, 288 mg. of potassium (vitamin K), 43 mg. of calcium, 81 mg. of vitamin C (over fifty percent of the RDA for vitamin C).  That’s above and beyond what you find when you cut into an orange.
